Artist Profile – Oby Onyioha
Oby Onyioha, widely known as the Queen of Atrado Rhythms, emerged as Nigeria’s disco sensation in the early 1980s. Following the success of her albums I Want to Feel Your Love and Break It, Onyioha cemented her place in the Nigerian music scene, standing alongside American icons such as Diana Ross and Patrice Rushen.
Born in Lagos in 1959, Oby Onyioha’s artistic journey was not immediately apparent, as she was the child of K.O.K. Onyioha, a religious traditionalist and founder of the Godian religion. She also excelled academically, earning two bachelor’s degrees, followed by a master’s degree and a doctorate, both in Social Anthropology. Onyioha’s educational background challenged the then-prevailing stereotype that women singers in Nigeria were often unfairly associated with promiscuity and a lack of education.
In 1981, Onyioha released her debut album, I Want to Feel Your Love, which became a commercial success. Produced by Lemmy Jackson, it blended disco, funk, and synthpop, departing from the sounds of folk, afrobeat, and afro-rock that had dominated the Nigerian music scene in the 1970s.
Her sophomore album, Break It, which was released in 1984, also proved to be successful. It incorporated the same genres while utilising breakbeat, giving it a hip-hop influence, another genre gaining popularity during that decade. Onyioha’s fusion of disco-funk and dance-pop pioneered the Nigerian disco music scene at a time when it was largely seen as Western music.
After Break It, Onyioha stepped away from music to pursue other interests, including co-writing a book series on the Igbo calendar system, drawing from her anthropology degree. In 2015, she made a return to music with her third album, Heritage, which differed dramatically from her previous work. By trading up-tempo, bouncy tracks for sweetly crooned ballads sung in Igbo, Heritage highlighted Onyioha’s cultural roots and artistic fluidity, replacing electronic elements with traditional harmonies.
Oby Onyioha’s legacy continues to shine. Her hit “Enjoy Your Life” has resurfaced in recent years, featured on Soundway Records’ Doing It In Lagos and sampled by Tokimonsta on her 2025 album Eternal Reverie. A true pioneer, Onyioha blended disco, rap, and traditional sounds with ease. The cultural legacy of the Queen of Atrado Rhythms remains undeniable.
